A new routine, and the importance of the SFD

What happened to May???  Maybe it’s being away on holiday for part of it, but this month seems to have gone before it has even started, and I feel quite panicky at the thought that it will be June tomorrow.  Since my return from Turkey, I have been trying to get into a new routine.  The first four months of the year were a frenzy of deadlines, but the payoff now is that all I have to do until the end of September is to finish the ‘time slip’.  This sold on the first 50,000 words, which was very exciting, but I sort of wish I’d sold a complete novel, as the task of finishing it after not looking at it for a year is a daunting one.

So daunting, in fact, that whenever I thought about it, I was terrified.  The word length isn’t set in stone, but I’ve envisaged about 150,000 words, with two intertwined stories, both set in York, one in the present and one in the 16th-century.  It is partly a historical novel, partly a ghost story, partly a romance, and partly a psychological thriller (sort of).  Picture me way out of my comfort zone!

It all seemed too much to deal with at first, and I had that awful rabbit-stuck-in-headlights feeling for a while but I did eventually get a grip and wrote myself a time plan until the end of June.  I also remembered the concept of the ‘shitty first draft’, from Anne Lamott’s wonderful article of the same name in her book about writing, Bird by Bird. ‘Very few writers really know what they are doing until they’ve done it’, Anne says.  The shitty first draft is when you give yourself permission to write rubbish: ‘let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place’.

You don’t show anyone your SFD.  It is just for you and I certainly find that once I let go of feeling that I have to write ‘properly’, it frees everything up.  I just fill the screen with words and because it doesn’t matter and I’m not trying to control it, that’s when the characters start to come alive and the story takes on a momentum of its own.  So I’ll realise writing one scene that the previous one doesn’t make any sense at all, and that her relationship with her sister has to be completely different, say.  I don't go back and change it at this stage, though. I just keep on writing.

In one way, most of the SFD is wasted words, that I throw away at the end and never look at again, but in another, I find that it’s a vital part of understanding the story.  No matter how stupid it is, the SFD gives me something to work with, and if nothing else it saves me from the terror of the blank screen.

So my time plan for June allows for a 40,000 word  rough draft of the remainder of the story.  I’ve broken that down into much smaller targets of between 1000 and 2000 words a day, which is much easier to contemplate than 100,000.  And within each day, I break that down again.  My new routine involves waking at 6.30 (a huge effort for me as I’m a night owl), and writing 300 words before I do anything else.  Because it’s a shitty first draft and it doesn’t matter what I write, it doesn’t take long, and sometimes it’s not even that shitty.

Then I have my shower or whatever, and write another 300, and so on through the day.  It’s amazing how quickly the words mount up when you’re just doing a little at a time, and I have already done 12,000 words and am two days ahead of my schedule, so feeling very pleased with myself.  Of course, when the SFD is done, I will have to start writing properly, and it will be a very different story then, but that’s a crisis for July. For now, I’m just thinking 300 words at a time …

Welcome Wendy S. Marcus

One of the best things about writing romance is  being part of a global community of women, readers and writers, from all round the world.  I’m writing this from (old) York, in the north of England, and am delighted to welcome new author Wendy S. Marcus, from New York, who has been introduced to me by Nas Dean from Fiji ... I love connections like these.

The romance writing community is an extraordinarily supportive one, and it’s always wonderful to hear about a new author like Wendy.

Wendy S. Marcus lives in upstate New York with her husband, two of her three children, and a much loved Bichon Frise named Buddy. A nurse by trade, after years of working in the medical profession, Wendy has taken a radical turn to writing hot contemporary romance with strong heroes, feisty heroines, and lots of laughs.  When she's not writing, she enjoys spending time with her family and blogging/e-mailing/tweeting with her online friends.  To learn more about Wendy, visit her website.

Here’s Wendy now, talking about productivity, which in my experience is something all writers fret about constantly, no matter how many books they’ve written.  I know I get to the end of most days and think: ‘I haven’t written enough words/pages/chapters/books today.  I must, must, must work harder tomorrow.’  So how do we measure our progress?  Leave a comment below, and you could be in with a chance to win a copy of Wendy’s book, When One Night Isn’t Enough.

Hi Jessica!
Thanks so much for hosting me on the sixth stop of my blog tour to promote my debut Harlequin Medical Romance When One Night Isn’t Enough.

While preparing to write this post I just happened to visit in time to read Jessica’s May 3rd post acknowledging the completion of her 58th book. Let me repeat that…HER 58TH BOOK.

So I decided to write about productivity and what we consider productive.

I, for one, think writing 58 books is darn productive. (Quite frankly, with only two completed books to my credit, it makes me feel rather unproductive in comparison.) It begs the question: How do you define productivity?

If you take a look at my life I have three children, a dog and a house. I have a master’s degree in health care administration and started my own consulting business, which was quite successful for over ten years, until I put it on hold to take a try at becoming a romance author. Since receiving ‘The Call’ in 2010 I have two Harlequin Medical Romances coming out and a contract for three more. I am also working on a non-fiction project with three writing friends. I post regularly on three blogs and am participating in a 25 stop blog tour to promote my book which requires 25 additional blog posts over three months. I’ve had a website designed and promo picture taken and have ordered my business cards, pens, and bookmarks. I’ve set up author profiles on at least ten different sites, created an author page on Facebook and joined Twitter.  In addition to all this I chauffer around my youngest, and her friends, and I’m the vice president of a volunteer organization and spend time coordinating dinners, preparing and serving food a local shelter, and stacking cereal boxes for a local food drive.

I seem like a rather productive person.

But that depends on how you define productivity. Because two books are not 58 books. And there are days, way too many of them I’m afraid,  where I feel like I’ve spent the entire day on the internet and have absolutely nothing to show for it. No additional words to my manuscript. No pages edited. And it makes me feel very unproductive.

So how do you define productivity? And do you consider yourself a productive person? One lucky commenter will win a copy of my 2in1 UK release, which includes a complete novel by Janice Lynn. (The winner will be plucked from my trusty margarine tub of names by my beautiful daughter on May 31st.)

Before I go I’d like to mention When One Night Isn’t Enough is currently available at the Mills & Boon website.  And coming to the U.S. and Aus/NZ in July 2011.

To read an excerpt visit my website.  And while you’re there, check out my Home page to see how you can enter to win an Amazon gift card.

A 25 stop blog tour in three months????  That sounds incredibly productive to me, Wendy!  Many congratulations on the publication of your first book, and may it just be the start of a hugely successful writing career.

A title and some good news

The book I’ve just finished – with Clara, who loved The Sound of Music, and Simon, a buttoned-up economist – now has a release date (January 2012) and a title: We’ll Always Have Paris.

Hhmmnn. I think I like it.  Sort of.  Maybe. I wrote it as a very light-hearted book, and I wonder if We’ll Always Have Paris makes it sound  a bit intense?  My working title was Looking for Mr Romance, which wasn’t very good, I know, so I’m probably not in a position to complain.

I do find it very hard to think of  a snappy title and usually resort to Hart Book no. X but the RIVA team have been coming up with some interestingly different titles since the launch of the series: Jackie Braun’s The Road Not Taken, Liz Fielding’s Tempted by Trouble, Kelly Hunter’s With This Fling, Natalie Anderson’s Dating and Other Dangers, Barbara Hannay’s Molly Cooper’s Dream Date … All designed, I think, to reflect a more ‘chicklitty’ feel to these stories.

Under the circumstances, I’ll admit to being a little disappointed with Ordinary Girl in a Tiara or The Secret Princess, say, which sound rather old-fashioned in comparison.  Still, a change from some of the more laboured titles of the past like Her Boss’s Baby Plan, Her Ready-Made Family or Promoted: To Wife and Mother.

What do you think about titles?  Do you like the new titles, or do you pick up an author that you know you like without even thinking about what the story is called?

Finally, I was so carried away by my holiday last week that I forgot to include some good news that was waiting for me on my return:  Oh-So-Sensible Secretary has been nominated for a Booksellers’ Best Award sponsored by the Greater Detroit Romance Writers of America - thank you GDRWA!  Fellow Harlequin Romance authors Donna Alward, Myrna Mackenzie and Marion Lennox are also on the shortlist so I’m delighted to be in such great company!

Guesting in the Paradise in the Pacific

Ordinary Girl goes to Fiji!
For those of you who haven't come across her already, Nas Dean is a passionate supporter of romance.  Based in beautiful Fiji, she has a varied and interesting  blog, Romance from the Paradise in the Pacific, that puts the rest of us (well, me) to shame, with regular guest slots from romance authors all around the world.

And today I'm there, talking about emotional tension, a subject much in my mind at the moment as I'll be teaching a whole course on it on Saturday.  So if you're interested in craft blogs and didn't catch it before, why not pop across to Fiji right now?

Nas has reviewed Ordinary Girl in a Tiara, too, and I'm offering a copy as a giveaway for anyone who leaves a comment there.

My holiday

The Turquoise Coast

Holidays are so good for you, we should all get them on the National Health.  I feel a million times better than before I went away, after a week not thinking about anything but the smell of pine needles and the feel of the sun on my shoulders and how good that beer was going to taste when we made it to the end of the day’s walk.

Lunch high above gorge on first day
I’ve been walking part of the Lycian

Way along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast with my best friend and Chief Plotting Advisor.  We started high in the hills, waking up that first morning to blue skies and snow-capped mountains, and ended up walking along forest paths with the sea on one side and sheer cliffs soaring on the other. At times we had to watch our feet, picking our way down stony hillsides or across landslides, but under the pines we could stride out and gawk at the spectacular views.
Aqueduct at Phaselis
Highlights: spotting the sea far in the distance; the wildflowers along the paths; reaching the sea and finding it just as turquoise as promised; spotting wild tortoises; wandering into the ruins of Phaselis; the sound of the frogs in the hauntingly overgrown city of Olympos; climbing down to the eternal flames of the Chimaera; trees laden with lemons; the last day’s walk through wild hills; and last, but not least, the old town in Antalya (more pix below).

Oh, and no blisters!

Now I’m home and contemplating my next deadlines, a word blissfully absent all last week.  First up is a one day Crash Course in Writing Romance which I’m teaching on Saturday, and then I must apply myself to finishing the time slip.  I can feel a timetable coming on …

Walking near Phaselis

Meanwhile, copies of Paradise Nights are in the post to everyone who sent me their address while I was away.  I tottered down to the post office laden with packages, but am delighted to have found good homes for so many of the books!  Thank you all for getting in touch.

Start of the walk, near Ovacik
In ruins of Olympos ... shame you can't hear the frogs!

Five phews, and a book to give away

Very big phew!  After a quick turnaround on some minor revisions, Book 58 is done and dusted, which means that I have met my five major deadlines by the end of April.  (To be truthful, I sent off the revised book on 1 May, but what’s twelve hours between friends?)
I have to say that I am hugely relieved to have got this far as there was a time when I thought I would never get through it all.  Since January I have researched and written a 30,000 word history of the Merchant Adventurers in York, project edited a 60,000 word illustrated book (think herding cats!), taught an 8 week course, written book 58 (53,000 words) and written a short story (only 2,000 words but set in the 18th century, about which I know nothing).  That was based on a portrait at Harewood House and is part of a contemporary art project, of which more on my return.
Now I feel as if I’ve earned my holiday.  I am off on Thursday to walk part of the Lycian Way on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast and I can’t wait!
Currently in scalded cat mode at the moment trying to tie up all the last little jobs before I go. Am also puzzling over the fact that although I go on more than my fair share of holidays, every time I do, it turns out that in spite of a wardrobe full of clothes I have nothing suitable to wear and I can’t for the life of me remember what I wore the last time I went away.
In my next life I’m going to be the kind of girl that can wear jeans and a T shirt, and just run her fingers through her hair in the morning and look fabulous.  Sadly this is not the case in my current existence.  This is partly because I put on huge amounts of weight whenever I’m on a deadline.  Somehow it’s just too difficult to exercise, eat sensibly and write at the same time, but I am planning to be trim, taut and terrific after walking the Lycian Way, and as soon as I get home I’ll be starting a new regime (not that I’ve ever said that before!)
Anyway, I will be away for the next 12 days so nothing from me for a while.  In the meantime, I am sitting on an unexpected delivery of 20 copies of PARADISE NIGHTS, an anthology which contains BAREFOOT BRIDE, as well as BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by Australian author Anne Oliver  and TAKEN BY THE BAD BOY by another Aussie, the fabulous, three times RITA-nominated Kelly Hunter.  If you don’t know Kelly’s books, TAKEN BY THE BAD BOY is a great one to start with – and I guarantee you’ll be wanting to read all her others when you’ve finished.
Usually I only get 2 author copies, but since I’ve got a glut this time, I’m struggling to find homes for them.  If you’d like a copy, why not send me your address in an email to jessica@jessicahart.co.uk and I will do a lucky dip/send them all out when I get back from Turkey?
